Stop rainforest destruction Stop Fonterra using palm kernel
The beautiful rainforests of Southeast Asia are under threat. Chainsaws, bulldozers and fires tear through these lush forests, destroying precious orangutan habitats, in order to plant row upon row of palm trees.
The New Zealand dairy industry, led by Fonterra, is the world’s biggest importer of palm kernel: a cheap animal feed that comes directly from these palm plantations in Southeast Asia.
Here in New Zealand, industrial dairying is our biggest climate polluter. There are so many cows that there isn’t enough grass to feed them. So, Fonterra is buying palm kernel to feed the massive dairy herd.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Already, farmers and dairy companies across the country are turning away from palm kernel, because of concerns over its role in rainforest destruction. It’s time for Fonterra to do the same.
