HALVE THE HERD FOR A HEALTHIER FARMING FUTURE

Over the last thirty years, New Zealand’s dairy herd has almost doubled. In some areas, the increase was even more extreme - Canterbury’s dairy herd increased by 10 times and Southland’s by 16 times.

The combination of too many cows and a 693% increase in synthetic fertiliser use has led to a dramatic rise in climate emissions, more polluted rivers, and contaminated drinking water that threatens people's health.

The intergovernmental panel on climate change says we must cut methane emissions by a third by 2030. To do that we need to reduce the dairy herd by simply breeding fewer cows.

Join the call on the Government to halve the industrial dairy herd by phasing out synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and imported feed, while supporting farmers to transition to more plant-based, regenerative organic farming so we can have a stable climate, clean rivers and water that’s safe to drink
