SOLARISE NZ TO BUILD BACK BETTEREveryone deserves to live free of the fear of wildfires, floods and droughts. The climate crisis is right now claiming whole communities with these extreme weather events. The IPCC has called it a “code red for humanity” and confirmed that without urgent action, this situation is set to get worse. Meanwhile our power companies are burning record amounts of coal here in Aotearoa. It just doesn’t add up. Here’s why: our electricity system is broken. It perversely incentivises big power companies to keep burning fossil fuels and not build new renewables - especially not household solar, which is owned and operated by regular people. Successive Governments (including this one) and power companies have sat on their hands for more than 20 years when they should have been supporting a huge roll out of clean energy. The result is record levels of coal being burned and blackouts reported in parts of the country. It’s time for the Government to step up and do what the power companies won’t. Join our call on the Government to solarise New Zealand and power our homes, transport and businesses with clean solar energy. By installing solar panels and batteries on half a million homes over the next ten years, we can really start to meet the challenge of the climate emergency, increase the resilience of our power grid, and give affordable power back to the people. It’s an ambitious plan, but we can do it. We can power our homes, transport and economy with clean energy and end our reliance on dirty fossil fuels. Read our Solarise NZ Policy in full here.
