REJECT COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY GREENWASH!
Right now, the commercial fishing industry is desperately trying to undermine ocean protection once again.
As discussions are underway to protect seamounts from bottom trawling destruction, Sealord has released its own alternative plan as an attempt to undermine progress and protect commercial fishing profits.
Sealord’s greenwash plan would:
- Exclude the vast majority of seamounts from protection
- Lock in bottom trawling on seamounts
- Allow trawling on seamounts that have not been trawled for over 10 years which could have started recovery
It’s classic greeenwash and we’ve seen this many times before. Whenever real ocean protection is on the horizon, the commercial fishing industry comes out swinging. They make it sound like they’re doing the right thing when they’re actually defending the status quo - no matter what the cost is to our blue planet.
We know that to protect the health of the ocean for the future, we must protect biodiversity hotspots like seamounts. So let’s do it properly.
Call on Rachel Brooking, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, to reject industry greenwash - and put ocean protection first. |
