Ban Bottom Trawling on Seamounts |
Right now the ocean is being plundered for profit by the commercial fishing industry with companies sending out boats to bottom trawl seamounts. The building blocks of ocean life, seamounts form essential breeding grounds for fish and a home for unique species - including fragile and slow growing coral, often dubbed ‘the kauri of the deep’. When trawling companies drag their heavy nets over these biodiversity hotspots they bulldoze everything in their path, destroying coral forests and other marine life. We’re calling on the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries David Parker to ban bottom trawling on seamounts. Together we can amplify this call and safeguard ocean health for the future. |
